How to Measure Plantation Shutters for Installation

Plantation shutters can add luxury and style to your home. Measure the windows for which you want shutters to be installed. Follow these steps to determine if shutters will be mounted on the outside or inside of your window frame. There are different methods of measuring. You should also consider the backspace, as it will allow for louver clearance and shutter operation. Also, ensure there is enough space for molding trim, hand cranks, and the window.

Establishing the Window Squareness

On each side measure your window diagonally. Your window may be out of square if there is any difference between the diagonal measurements. You should not have a difference of more than 1/4 inch. Anything between 1/4 and 1/2 inches is considered square. Anything greater than 1/2 inch is considered very out of square. Your window squareness will determine the type of mount and frame you choose for your plantation shutters.

Mounting Plantation Shutters

Measure the height and trim of the trim or drywall at the point where plantation shutters are to be mounted. Consider whether the trim or drywall is recessed further into the window opening. To determine the location of your shutters, measure the width that is closest to the window opening. Measure the exact window opening when measuring inside mounting shutters. Do not make deductions. Because shutters are made slightly smaller by the factory than your measurements, precise measurements are essential. Round down to the nearest one-half inch. If the measurement falls between 3/16″ or 1/4″, round it down to 3/16″. Shutters that are too large will not fit if you round them up. When ordering, choose the shortest height and narrowest width. Both diagonal lines are required. These measures include the vertical height from the left and right sides of the frame, as well as horizontally at both the top and bottom of the frame.

Outside Mounting Plantation Shutters

When mounting shutters to the frame’s outside, there are some things you should consider. Start by determining how much area you want the shutter to cover. Do not place it on the window. Decide if the shutter’s frame will be mounted on the trim, on top, or outside the trim. The same horizontal, vertical, and diagonal methods are used, but the area that covers the outside is used as the beginning and ending points. Make sure you consider the need for your shutter to clear the trim if it is mounted outside the trim. The manufacturer of plantation shutters will not take any measurements from outside mounting plantation shutters.
